Amsterdam is an amazing city that spans centuries of history and culture and yet has both feet firmly planted in the 21st century. Settled in the 12th century as a small fishing village, Amsterdam developed into one of the commercial centers of the world and in the 17th century was the wealthiest city in the world. Today Amsterdam is the cultural and financial center of Holland with many Dutch institutions having their headquarters in the city. Museums

Squares

Amsterdam is a city of squares, each with its own character. It's a good idea, if the weather is fine, to take a walk through some of the squares, look at the architecture, browse through the shops, enjoy a cup of coffee and just chill out! The most well known square is Dam Square, Amsterdam's central square from where you can easily get a tram or a taxi to all parts of the city. Canals

Amsterdam is crossed by four central canals and a boat ride is obligatory.
